In Home Tutoring Information Our tutoring services are offered in your home, or at another location at your request. We want our students to work some where they feel comfortable, but also some where they can study. We generally do not perform diagnostic tests. Unless they are conducted and evaluated by a psychoeducational professional, such testing is generally no more useful than a tutor working directly with a student. We would rather see your money and time spent on a service that will directly benefit your child. Our tutors can quickly determine where your child's deficeits are and work with them accordingly. Our tutoring goals are to give students the skills they will need not only to succeed in their current classes, but to continue having academic success in the future. Our tutoring is very practically oriented. Tutors will generally work with students on concepts they have already covered in class, from their actual classroom matererials. The tutors will go over key points that the student may have missed or not understood. Then the tutor will work with the student on practice items to be certain the student understands and is able to apply the concepts. Students are required to bring textbooks, notebooks, worksheets and past quizes and tests to work on with the tutor. These methods will allow the tutor to keep the student current on skills they need to do their work in class, on assignments and on exams. If you require materials for tutoring sessions, we can provide them, but you will be required to pay for the student copies. If you want tutoring on something a student has not taken in class we can accomodate you. We offer custom tutoring modules for enrichment, remediation and instruction. We tutor early and late literacy skills, numeracy, and a variety of other skills and topics. We also do diploma examination preparation in the provinces that have them, Alberta and British Columbia. If you don't want to follow the school program, just ask, and we will do our best to give your children the help they need. Our tutors are all well qualified in the subject fields they tutor in. We require tutors to have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject field before we will even consider an application. When we review resumes and references we check for teaching ability and reliability around children. Of course we also encourage parents to observe tutoring sessions as they happen to be sure the student is getting what is needed. When you sign up for tutoring, we will recommend time for tutoring. In general, two to three hours per week is the most effective amount. We generally recommend two hours a week for elementary and senior high school students. Elementary students, however, find it difficult to concentrate on one topic for that length of time, so we break the elementary sessions into two one hour sessions per week. Senior high school students do well with session lengths of two hours once per week. Junior high school students typical show the most improvement with one or two sessions of one and one half hours per week. Over the long term, you can expect to see an eight to twelve per cent improvement in your child's initial marks on average if you follow these guidelines. In order to sign up for one on one in home tutoring, all you need to do is call us. We will need to ask some questions to determine what sort of help your child needs. Any information you choose to share will assist us. Once we have all the relevant facts, we can start placing a tutor. Before we do that, however, you must provide payment. All our tutoring is done on a prepaid basis. We accept visa and mastercard payments over the phone. This is the fastest way to get started. You can also pay be check or money order. These must be sent in to our office at PO box 71006, RPO Northtown, Edmonton, AB, T5E 6J8. We can begin looking for a tutor upon receipt of a money order, but checks must clear the bank before we can begin. Once payment is processed, it usually takes 2-3 business days to get a tutor in contact with you. How much tutoring you wish to book is up to you, but tutoring is most effective when it is done over the long term. We offer blocks of five and ten hours at discounted rates, but only if they are used for regular weekly tutoring. In general you will find that the best results are obtained from at least ten hours of tutoring spread over a five week period. It is more effective to do two hours a week for five weeks than to do ten hours in one week. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 1-800-470-2608. We will be happy to answer them. If you call outside of our normal business hours, please leave a message and we will follow up the next business day. It is our goal to give you the services you need for success.
