Traditional jobs and particularly job security are rapidly becoming a dying breed. While many people have happy, satisfying lifelong careers, many others just cannot stand the traditional rat race. Today, however, there are many options to the tradition forms of employment.

First of all, there are many things you can do on the net that will pay you a small supplemental income. If you combine a number of these into a regular plan, you can earn a living wage from them. Paid surveys, Pay to Click sites, Randomizers and Secret shopper systems all fall under this catagory of Activty Based Income.

Another supplemental income source, that can turn into full time income if you're willing to work at it is residual income. In a residual income program, you make an initial investment of time and/or money, and as a result get a long term income source. You have to be very careful with residual income programs, however. Many, if not most, of them are MLM (multilevel marketing) and other similar schemes. I do not consider these to be residual income sources because you have to keep recruiting new people (and often buying more products) to maintain your income level. Residual imcome programs should not require full time efforts from you. There are also a number of programs that are outright scams. There are a few programs that do work, but you have to look to find them. I'll list the ones that are working for me, as well as some that have sound residual business plans in the Residual Income Resources section.

Another option that is more comfortable for many is working from home and freelancing. In these situations, you are still working for someone else, and you still get a normal paycheck (or an irregular set of paychecks for freelancers). You still have assignments and deadlines. The difference from a normal job is that you can do most of the work from your home instead of an office, thus allowing more freedom and more options. Again you have to be careful. Many work from home opportunities are just MLM and other such schemes. A true work from home program will offer you either a regular paycheck or some other traditional payment terms, such as pay on completion. There are many opportunities for real work at home projects, however, especially with outsourcing becoming more and more popular.

Finally, you may want to start your own business. While the risks are high, this can be a very rewarding option, and not just financially. You get to be your own boss, make all the decisions for yourself, and make or break on your own merits. Of course the disadvantages are the same, you don't have the security of having a boss or a regular paycheck, you have to make all the decisions yourself, and you make or break on your own mertits.

With layoffs becoming the standard for many businesses there are many people entering the ranks of the self employed. Some succeed and some fail. You can improve your odds of success if you get some information first. As such, as with any of the other alternatives, it's better to start off with your employment alternative while you are still employed. All of the above alternatives, including running your own business, can be done in your spare time while you work your steady job as well. If you think this is a bad idea because it will cut into your leisure time, then running a business is not for you. Self employment takes a lot of time and energy and you will see a major dip in your spare time. So if you treasure your weekends off, look for other possibilities. If you're prepared to make the effort, then check out our Self Employment Resources for some ideas on how to maximize your odds.
